Hardware & wiring

General setup for each controller first, then wiring details per wash vendor.

Overview

RinsePay controllers connect to the equipment you already own through dry-contact relays and talk to the RinsePay platform over Ethernet. The customer pays in the app; the controller closes a relay exactly the way a coin or a wash-package button would.

Two boards. RCP-Alpha has 4 relays and is the fit for self-serve bays, vacuums and vending. RCP-Beta-PoE has 8 relays and 8 inputs and is the fit for automatic washes. Every relay on both boards is a dry-contact SPDT relay with NO, NC and COM terminals, so the equipment supplies its own voltage and you can wire normally-open or normally-closed.

Power: Power-over-Ethernet on both boards (one cable for power and data). RCP-Alpha also accepts 12 V DC on its DC terminal when PoE is not available. Either way the board needs an Ethernet cable with DHCP and outbound internet (443 and 8883). Bandwidth is tiny, about 1 KB per transaction.

How many boards per bay? One board per bay or machine is the suggested layout. You can run more boards on one bay (an automatic that needs more than 8 relays, or inputs on a separate board) or fewer (one RCP-Beta-PoE driving two simple bays), because every relay is assigned to a bay individually in the app.

Where things are configured: everything lives in the app under Locations, then the bay, then Equipment. Simple mode assigns a job to each relay. Advanced mode builds step programs (close relay, wait, close another relay) and uses the inputs. Nothing is copied between the two modes.

Getting Started

Tools and parts: small and medium screwdrivers, strippers for 16-18 AWG stranded wire, a multimeter, a few lever-nut splices, the controller, an Ethernet cable to your PoE switch or injector, and about 6 inches of 18 AWG wire per relay you plan to use.

Safety first. Turn off power at the breaker to the timer or wash controller before landing any wire, verify the circuit is dead with the multimeter, and keep the controller indoors and dry: an equipment room, control cabinet or electrical panel, away from spray and heat. Mount on a DIN rail or with screws.

1. Power and network. Plug Ethernet into a PoE switch port or injector (802.3af/at). For an RCP-Alpha without PoE, land 12 V DC on the DC terminals instead (never both at once). The status LED comes on within a few seconds and goes solid once the board is online. The network needs DHCP and outbound internet on 443 and 8883.

2. Claim the board in the app with the QR code on the label or the controller id: Hardware, then Controllers, then Claim. Wait for the green Online indicator before you wire anything. The board reports its model and firmware on the first heartbeat; firmware updates arrive automatically overnight.

3. Assign it to a bay: Locations, then the bay, then Equipment, then Add board. The board appears as a header with one row per relay.

4. Pick the job for each relay (Simple mode): coin drop or constant output for self-serve and vacuums, one coin-drop relay for vending, a wash tier or upsell per relay for automatics. Relays you leave unused stay free for other bays. A bay with no relay assigned shows Not set up yet to customers and cannot be paid.

5. Wire the relays. NO to the equipment's signal terminal and COM to its common for a normally-open circuit (the usual case). Use NC and COM where the equipment expects a closed circuit that opens to trigger. 16-18 AWG stranded, strip about 6 mm, tighten the screw and tug-test. Relays are dry contacts: the equipment supplies the voltage (up to 10 A).

6. Test from the bay editor (each relay row has a test button) and then with a real purchase in the app.

Inputs share one common On RCP-Beta-PoE every input shares Input COM. Dry contact: wire the equipment relay between Input n and Input COM. Wet signal (5-36 V): positive to Input n, negative to Input COM. Set Signal = active or No signal = active per input in the app.

Self-Serve, Vacuum and Vending Wiring

Self-serve bays and vacuums use one relay in one of two modes, chosen in the bay editor. Vending machines use the coin-drop mode only. Pick the relay on the board header, wire it, done.

Coin drop. The relay closes briefly to simulate a coin dropping through the acceptor; each pulse credits one coin on the timer. Land NO and COM in parallel with the coin acceptor's two coin-signal wires. Works with every self-serve timer, every vac and every electronic vending acceptor. Pulse timing uses the board default; the app sends the number of pulses that matches the purchase amount and the coin value you set (25 cents by default).

Constant. The relay closes and stays closed for the whole session, driving the timer's credit-card / count-up input, so the customer sees a running charge like a gas pump. The relay opens when the customer stops the wash in the app, the purchased time runs out, or the bay maximum is reached. Use it when the timer has a CC / count-up input (verified on Dixmor LED6 pin 8 and LED7 pin 9).

Never wire both modes into the same timer at once. They drive different inputs and interfere. You can switch modes in the app later; just move the wire.

Vending machines need an electronic coin acceptor with a dry-contact pulse output (IDX MA850 feeding a DigiMax board, for example). Mechanical coin mechs cannot be integrated. Land the relay across the acceptor's coin-signal pair and set the credit step in the machine's app settings to the acceptor's per-pulse value (1 pulse = 25 cents on the MA850 / DigiMax pairing). The pulse line is one way: the machine does not report whether the item vended.

If the network drops during a constant-mode wash the relay stays closed until the bay's maximum wash time (default 10 minutes, set per bay) so the customer is never cut off. Coins and existing card systems keep working untouched: RinsePay wires in parallel and neither side knows about the other.

Test: fire the relay from the bay editor and confirm the timer credits one coin per pulse (coin drop) or the motor runs while the relay is held (constant). Then buy the smallest amount end to end with a real phone.

Automatic Wash Wiring

Automatic washes (in-bay automatics, rollovers, tunnel entry) all follow one pattern: the wash controller has one input per wash package. When a customer buys a package, RinsePay momentarily closes the relay you assigned to that package, exactly like the pay station would.

Simple mode: in the bay editor each relay row gets a wash tier or an upsell from your catalog (or stays unused). Wire each assigned relay's NO to that package's input on the wash controller and COM to the controller's common. Upsells (hot wax, tire shine) get their own relay and fire after the tier with the delay you set on the row. Only one tier relay fires per purchase.

Inputs (RCP-Beta-PoE): wire the equipment's wash-running output to Input 1 as *In operation* so purchases queue (or are blocked, your choice per bay) while a car is in the bay, and the fault / E-stop output to Input 2 as *Out of service* so the app shows the bay down instead of taking money. Cycle-complete and coin-counter inputs are optional.

Advanced mode builds step programs for equipment that wants more than one pulse: close relay 2 for 2 s, wait 3 s, close relay 5 for 3 s. Steps can wait, pulse, hold, release, drop coins or wait for an input, and programs can be triggered by a tier or upsell purchase, an input, a button or a schedule. Advanced mode starts empty; it does not copy the Simple layout.

The wash controller supplies the voltage (typically 24 V DC or 24 V AC, sometimes 120 V AC) through the relay contacts. RinsePay relays are dry contacts rated 10 A, so they only close the circuit. Existing pay stations stay wired in parallel and keep working.

Vendor sections below give the typical terminal names for each wash manufacturer. Confirm them against your as-built drawing or the manufacturer's manual before landing wires, and call the vendor support line listed in each section with your machine serial number if anything is unclear.

Queue or block while a wash runs With an In operation input wired, choose per bay whether purchases queue (the wash starts when the bay frees up, auto-refund if it waits too long) or are blocked with a message.

Troubleshooting

Controller not online: check the Ethernet cable at both ends; confirm the switch port or injector is PoE-enabled and powered (or, on an RCP-Alpha without PoE, that 12 V DC is present on DC IN); try another cable or port; confirm the network has DHCP and outbound internet on 443 and 8883. The status LED should light within a few seconds and go solid once online.

Wash not activating when a customer pays: verify NO to the signal wire and COM to common (or NC where the equipment expects it); confirm the relay row in the bay editor points at the relay you actually wired; test the relay from the bay editor. If the test fires but a real purchase does not, the problem is the bay configuration, not the wiring.

Customers see Not set up yet: the bay has a board but no relay assigned. Open the bay's Equipment page and give one relay a job.

Constant mode not working on self-serve: confirm the timer has a CC / count-up input (Dixmor LED6 pin 8, LED7 pin 9) and that the coin-drop wire is not also landed on the same timer.

Coin drop credits the wrong amount: check the coin value in the bay editor matches what one pulse is worth on the timer or acceptor. If pulses are missed, the timer counts too slowly for the default pulse timing; switch the bay to Advanced mode and lengthen the pulse and gap.

Automatic bay stuck In use: the In operation input is reading active. Check the input's polarity setting (Signal = active vs No signal = active) and the wiring to Input COM. Queued purchases refund automatically after the bay's maximum wait.

Still stuck? Email support@rinsepay.app with the controller id, the bay name and a photo of the wiring.
